Landmark Case

Silvain v. Ye Yongqing — China's Highest Art Copyright Award

In what became the most significant art copyright case in Chinese legal history, Wesley Sourcing led the full process of defending Belgian artist Christian Silvain against Chinese painter Ye Yongqing, who had copied 122 of Silvain's works over nearly 30 years.

Our team identified the infringement, assembled the legal team, coordinated evidence collection across two continents, and managed the entire litigation process. The artist himself provided only the foundational evidence — we did the rest.

In 2023, the Beijing Intellectual Property Court ruled in Silvain's favor. Following appeal, the Beijing High Court upheld the decision in January 2025. Ye Yongqing was ordered to pay RMB 5 million (approx. €650,000) in damages and issue a public apology — the highest compensation ever awarded in a Chinese art copyright case.
